What should I stockpile first?

Water

Water is the first and most essential item that you should stockpile. You can live without food for several weeks, but you will only survive without water for a few days. Store at least one gallon of water per person, per day.

Collect rainwater

Collecting rainwater is a great way to save water and money. Here are some tips on how to get started:

1.Install a rain barrel or cistern. A rain barrel or cistern can collect and store water that would otherwise be lost to evaporation.

2.Position your rain barrel or cistern under a gutter downspout. This will help ensure that the water you collect is clean and free of debris.

3.Place a screen over the top of your rain barrel or cistern to keep out insects and animals.

4.Consider using a pump to move the water from your rain barrel or cistern to an area where it can be used, such as a garden hose spigot or watering can. This will allow you to use the water you collect more quickly and easily.

Find a water source

One of the most important things you can do when you are planning a hike is to make sure you know where you will find water. Depending on the length and difficulty of your hike, you may need to carry all the water you will need with you. Or, if you are hiking in an area where there are natural sources of water, such as streams or lakes, you will need to know how to filter or purify the water before drinking it.

There are many ways to purify water, including boiling, filtering, and using chemicals. Each method has its own pros and cons, so it is important to do some research before deciding which method is right for you.

If you are carrying all the water you will need, it is important to know how much water your body needs per day. The general rule of thumb is that you should drink about 1 liter (about 4 cups) of water per hour of hiking. However, this number can vary depending on factors such as temperature and humidity. If it is hot or humid, or if you are exerting yourself more than usual, you may need to drink more water than this.

Purify water

One of the most important things you can do to prepare for an emergency is to purify water. During a disaster, water lines may be damaged or contaminated water may be present, making water unsafe to drink. There are several ways you can purify water in an emergency.

-Boiling: Boiling is the most foolproof method of purifying water. Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute. At altitudes above 5,000 feet (1,000 meters), boil for three minutes.

-Chemical treatment: Commercial products that disinfect and kill bacteria, such as iodine or chlorine tablets or liquid bleach (unscented only), are effective when used according to the instructions on the label. Be sure to add the right amount of chemical – too little will not disinfect properly and too much may make the water taste bad. If using bleach, use 4 drops per gallon/liter of clear water or 8 drops per gallon/liter of cloudy water. Let the treated water stand for 30 minutes before using it.

-Solar Disinfection: If you can’t boil your water or treat it with chemicals, you can disinfect it with sunlight. Pour the clear water into a clean plastic bottle and screw on the lid tightly. Place the bottle on its side in direct sunlight for 6 hours (if possible) or until there is no more cloudiness in thewater .You can also use this method to disinfect small amounts of cloudy water by allowing the UV rays from sunlight to pass through it – this process will take longer though, about 48 hours

Food

First, you should always stockpile non-perishable items such as canned goods, dry goods, and other items that have a long shelf life. These items will last you the longest and will be the most useful in an emergency situation. You should also stockpile items that you and your family will use on a regular basis. This could include items like toilet paper, paper towels, and other household items.

Store non-perishable food

Canned goods, dry goods, and other non-perishables are good to have on hand in case you can’t make it to the grocery store for a while. Check expiration dates on cans and boxed goods, and rotate your stock so that you are using the oldest items first. Store food in cool, dark, and dry places.

Grow a garden

Gardening is a great way to get outside and enjoy the fresh air, while also getting some exercise and working towards a goal. Growing your own food can also save you money at the grocery store, and it’s a great way to know exactly what’s going into your body.

If you’re new to gardening, it can be overwhelming to try and figure out where to start. The most important thing is to just get started! Here are a few tips to help you get started growing your own food:

-Pick a spot in your yard that gets at least six hours of sunlight per day. If you don’t have a lot of space, you can also grow plants in containers on your porch or balcony.

  • Decide what you want to grow. There are tons of different vegetables, fruits, and herbs that you can grow at home. Do some research to figure out which ones will do well in your climate and which ones you like to eat.
  • Get your hands on some good quality seeds or starts (young plants that have already been started from seed). You can find these at most hardware stores or online.
  • Make sure you have the right supplies. In addition to seeds or starts, you’ll need soil, fertilizer, pots or raised beds, watering cans or hoses, and possibly some supports for climbing plants.
  • Once you have everything you need, it’s time to start planting! Make sure you follow the instructions on the seed packets (or from whoever sold you the starts) for planting depth and spacing. Water regularly and keep an eye out for pests or diseases.
  • Harvest time! When your plants are big enough, it’s time to start reaping the rewards of all your hard work. Depending on what you’re growing, you may need to harvest every day or two or just once a week. Be careful not to over-harvest – leaving some fruits or vegetables on the plant will ensure that it continues producing food for future harvests.

Hunt or fish

In many parts of the world, people have traditionally hunted or fished for food. Hunting and fishing are still popular today, both for recreation and as a source of food.

There are a few different ways to hunt or fish for food. Some people may choose to trap animals, while others will use nets or spears. Some people may even choose to scavenge for food instead of hunting or fishing.

Scavenging is the act of searching through an area for edible plants or animals. This can be done by looking for fruit on trees or bushes, or by looking for nuts, berries, and other plant foods. It can also be done by looking for small animals such as rodents or reptiles.

Shelter

Your first priority should be stockpiling items to build or reinforce your shelter. This could be anything from lumber and tools to build a completely new shelter, to nails and tarps to reinforce your existing one. A sturdy shelter is key to surviving any disaster, as it will protect you from the elements and provide a measure of security from looters and raiders.

Build a shelter

A shelter is a temporary roof over your head. It can be made from many different materials, including wood, metal, and plastic. If you are in an emergency situation and need to build a shelter quickly, here are some things to keep in mind.

-Find a level spot on high ground. This will help keep your shelter dry and protect you from flooding.
-Clear the area of debris such as rocks and sticks.
-If you have a tarp, use it to create a roof for your shelter. Otherwise, build a frame out of branches and cover it with leaves or other vegetation.
-If you have time, insulate your shelter by lining the floor with soft materials such as leaves or pine needles.
-Make sure your shelter has ventilation to allow fresh air in and prevent carbon dioxide build-up.

Find a shelter

There are many types of shelters to choose from, each providing different levels of protection and comfort. It’s important to think about your needs before you look for a shelter. Some factors to consider include:

-the size of the shelter,
-the type of climate you need protection from,
-whether you need protection from insects or animals,
-if the shelter will be used for short-term or long-term use,
-how easy it is to set up and take down, and
-how much it costs.

Protect your shelter

Your home is your refuge from all the stress and cares of the world, so it’s important to do everything you can to protect it. From making sure your insurance is up to date to installing a security system, there are a lot of things you can do to give yourself peace of mind. Here are just a few ideas to get you started.

One of the most important things you can do to protect your home is to make sure you have adequate insurance. Talk to your agent about what kind of coverage you need and be sure to update your policy if anything changes, like if you add an addition to your home or get a new roof.

Installing a security system is another great way to deter burglars and give yourself some peace of mind. There are many different types of systems available, so find one that fits your needs and budget.

You can also protect your home by taking some simple precautions around the yard. Keep trees and shrubs trimmed so they don’t provide cover for nefarious activities and make sure all entry points are well lit.Consider adding motion-sensor lights around vulnerable areas like garages and sheds.

Clothing and bedding

While many experts will suggest that you stockpile food first, I believe that clothing and bedding should come first. The reason being is that if a disaster strikes, you will need clothing and bedding to keep you warm and dry. While food is important, it can be replaced. Clothing and bedding, however, can be much more difficult to replace.

Get warm clothing and bedding

Be prepared for cold weather by making sure you have plenty of warm clothing and bedding. If you don’t have central heating, you’ll need extra blankets and a hot water bottle would be useful too. It’s also a good idea to have some warm clothes ready for any power cuts.

If you’re going away during the winter, take some warm clothes with you even if you’re staying in a hotel.

Get waterproof clothing and bedding

Waterproof your clothing and bedding. It will help you stay dry and warm, and will prevent your belongings from getting ruined if you get wet.

There are a few different ways to waterproof your clothing and bedding. You can buy waterproof sprays or treatments, or you can sew your own waterproof coverings.

If you buy waterproof sprays or treatments, make sure to follow the directions carefully. You will usually need to reapply the product after a certain number of washes, or after exposure to extreme weather conditions.

If you sew your own waterproof coverings, choose a fabric that is both waterproof and breathable. This will help to keep you comfortable while you are wearing the gear, and will also prevent condensation from building up inside of it.

Get sturdy shoes

When your child starts to walk, they need sturdy shoes to protect their feet. Get shoes that are:
-The right size – there should be about a thumb’s width of space at the end of the shoe
-Flexible – you should be able to bend the shoe at the ball of the foot
-Well-fitting – shoes that are too big or too small can be uncomfortable and make it harder to walk

You don’t need to spend a lot of money on shoes for a child who is just starting to walk. You can buy inexpensive, flexible shoes from supermarkets or discount stores.
