What is nuclear radiation?
Radiation is energy that travels and spreads out as it goes – the visible light we see is a form of radiation. Radiation is present in our environment, both naturally and due to human activities, and comes from a variety of sources including the sun, rocks, soil, air, and water.
There are two main types of nuclear radiation – ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation has enough energy to strip electrons away from atoms, which makes the atom unstable or “ionized.” This type of radiation is what we typically think of when we hear about nuclear radiation – it can damage cells and cause harm to the human body. All types of nuclear Radiation can be either internally or externally irradiated. Internally irradiated means that the person has been exposed to radioactive materials that have entered their body – for example, by inhaling or ingesting them. This type of exposure is more likely to result in harmful health effects than external exposure because the radioactive materials can come into contact with sensitive tissues and organs. External exposure means that a person has been exposed to radioactive materials that are on the outside of their body – for example, by standing next to someone who has been internally irradiated.
How does aluminum foil block nuclear radiation?
