Having enough food to survive is one of the most important things you can have in this world. Luckily, we live in an over-consumerized society where it’s easy to get plenty of food.
But what people don’t realize is that even though they may feel like they are eating well, they aren’t. Just because something says “broccoli” on it doesn’t mean that broccoli has actually been consumed.
Many foods contain large amounts of sugar or salt that help them taste better but add to your waistline later. With obesity being such a big health problem, having too much junk food in your diet can be a deadly mistake.
Running out of food is always more serious than running out of money, but unfortunately, it happens quite often in disasters.
Water
We’re talking about water here, so let’s get specific! The average person needs to know how to survive with only one bottle of water per day.
We’ve all heard that drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water is essential for health, but what are the best ways to make sure we’re meeting our daily quota?
The number of drinks depends on your age and body size. For example, if you’re middle aged and have weight fluctuation, then you may want to drink less than someone who is younger or more lean.
Also, remember that most beverages contain several percent alcohol, so they count as a drink. (For examples, check out our list of alcoholic beverages and their volume.
Lighting and communication
Having enough light to work by is a crucial component to staying alive. A good night’s sleep depends on your ability to find and use adequate amounts of natural light, as well as having access to appropriate levels of artificial lighting.
We spend around one-third of our time awake in darkness so naturally our bodies have evolved to be able to function without much illumination.
However, today we are increasingly using technology that does not backlight or otherwise limit accessibility to light. This means we can stay online longer than ever before, which helps us connected but also makes it more difficult to achieve rest due to overexposure to bright lights.
There are many ways to mitigate this problem with smart lighting – for example, setting timers to turn off all internal lighting several hours before bed, or putting sheets over computer screens to prevent them from emitting glow-ware. However, if possible, limiting screen exposure to just before sleeping and during early waking periods is optimal.
In addition to helping you get some sleep, research shows that sufficient exposure to sunlight may help boost mood and reduce stress, making it an important part of most people’s daily health routines. Unfortunately, modern living often limits this for individuals, especially those who rely on electronic devices for work.
Survival gear
While there are lots of flashy gadgets that seem to promise “survival” or even “self-defense weapon systems,” we have determined that nothing really works unless it is used for its intended purpose.
Most people buy into the marketing hype surrounding these products because they want to feel safe, so they purchase them. Then they get nervous when they can’t find their product!
That is why we decided to write this article about all of the essential pieces of personal safety equipment that anyone should own. We will try our best not to offend any budget constraints, but we believe everyone needs at least one item from each category in their everyday life.
This way, if something happens, you don’t suffer due to lack of self-protection tools. The hard truth is that security does not come free. If it did, then we would not worry about protecting ourselves in the first place.
But we hope by making an honest assessment of what costs how much, you will gain some valuable insights into your budget and determine which areas you can afford to upgrade. And once you do, you can focus on adding more protective gear in those areas.
So let’s dive in and see what types of personal protection equipment you should keep in your arsenal.
Sanitation and Hygiene
With no running water or proper sanitation, your health can suffer dramatically. Diseases spread easily in such conditions as there is limited washing or cleaning of yourself or other people.
There are many ways to survive with only these resources including practicing basic hygiene such as washing hands regularly, keeping wounds covered, and always brushing your teeth.
More advanced methods include using sterilized drinking supplies or purifying your own urine (by eating foods that contain glucose). More sophisticated survivors find ways to collect rainwater or use gray or green energy sources for water disinfection.
Shelter and warmth
Surviving in the wilderness does not mean living under or next to the ocean! Depending on your resources, you can survive in much larger areas such as mountains, deserts, or even underwater!
Shelter is one of the most important things to have when exploring the great outdoors. It protects you from the elements and helps keep yourself warm.
You will probably start out looking for shelter that are easy to find and use, but it is better to learn how to make or find more advanced shelters than needed early on. This way you won’t lose too much time investing in the harder ones!
There are several types of shelter to choose from including tents, blankets, sleeping bags, and boxes. Each one has their strengths depending on what type of weather condition you will be facing.
Solar powered blankets are very helpful since they don’t require any external power sources. They also self-adjust so if someone has to leave at night they can take just the blanket with them without having to worry about leaving anything behind!
People often times underestimate the value of being able to wash all of your clothes and equipment before putting them away until later. By washing them now they will stay lighter weight and hold up longer due to less stress on the fabric.
If there is no water available you can always try using other materials like dirt or sand to preserve some moisture.
First aid
First aid is one of the most important skills to have in case of an emergency or medical situation. This includes helping someone who has suffered from exposure, poisoning, injury, or disease.
There are several different types of first aid, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), wound care, basic oral health, and pain management. All of these save lives because they address the main issues that could potentially be involved in a crisis scenario.
Knowing how to perform each skill correctly can make all the difference when needed. Only practice will truly show how much!
First aid should always be practiced with the right equipment so it does not hinder effectiveness. For example, if CPR was done without proper quality hands, then it would not work properly. Therefore, make sure to invest in good quality supplies.
